Cars in Germany's City Found Smeared with Nazi Symbols in Blood, Police Confirm

Incident location Affected vehicle Local Police
Police reported they were contacted by a man who discovered a car in Hanau marked with reddish liquid

Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.

Law enforcement say they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.

The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they added.

Law enforcement then discovered many other smeared automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Police report initial examinations show the liquid was likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no clue as to its source; investigators are presently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the event," they commented.

City officials said they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.

A high-ranking official said the attack made him stunned and had to be solved rapidly.

"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing attack in 2020," he posted on online, mentioning the death of nine victims by a shooter focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
