Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the ability to challenge particular decisions from the official, mirroring the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
